DescriptionRoman Štětina is a Czech multimedia artist whose videos, installations, and audiovisual works primarily draw on sound, spoken word, and their manipulation. His work also incorporates radio and television broadcasts, which he is deeply familiar with as a musician and long-term employee of the Czech Radio. His artistic practice also includes work with archival materials, which he updates and translates into impressive technical projects. These works explore media culture as a social construct with firmly defined methods and preconceived expectations.
This video titled Lemonade (2019) was originally part of Štětina’s installation Centones which also incorporated light box images. It is inspired by the ancient Greek literary form cento and shows short snippets of other artists’ works converted into audiovisual imagery. The eye-catching video Lemonade captures sonic and visual fragments from the café at the New Stage of the National Theatre in Prague and spotlights questions regarding the relations between reality and illusion, past and present.
Roman Štětina (*1986, Kadaň) lives and works in Prague. In 2015, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague having also spent two years at the Städelschule in Frankfurt, where he was based in Judith Hopf’s and Douglas Gordon’s studios.
