DescriptionPavel Tichoň’s artistic practice is defined by a critique of the current socio-political system, its methods, and its consumerization of everyday life. In his commentary, Tichoň spotlights negative phenomena related to fanatical consumerism and the omnipresent pressure to be successful. He also poses questions regarding the role of the artist and the inaccessibility of art for large parts of society. Despite addressing serious themes, his work often incorporates humor, hyperbole, and irony. His artistic expression freely and intuitively draws on a variety of formal devices. Tichoň’s approach combines the channeling of free-flowing associations with a conceptually detached perspective which fuses quotations from art history and advertising motifs, removing them from their established contexts and interpretations.

Pavel Tichoň (*1980, Uherské Hradiště) studied in Milan Knížák’s Studio of Intermedia Work and Pavel Bielický’s New Media Studio at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He also spent time studying at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague (2003-2004) and the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague, where he studied architecture and design under Jiří Pelc (2002-2003). From 2007 to 2011, he pursued a postgraduate degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Milan Knížák, but never completed his studies. His work is regularly featured in both solo and group exhibitions at large institutions and independent galleries.
